ALGERIA • Geography •

Algeria is located in the North of Africa facing the Mediterranean sea with 1 200 km of coasts.

Second larger country of Africa in surface and tenth in the world. The great majority

of the territory (more than 80%) constitutes the Sahara (desert).

Very rich country by the diversity of its marvellous landscapes and by its subsoil

(Petrol, gas, gold, uranium...).

The climate is very varied according to northern and southern zones. The temperatures

can vary from -5° to 50°, according to the areas and seasons.

L'lgeria consists of three main zones :

The littoral(coastline) : Constitutes the coastal cities, between the Mediterranean and the chains of the Tellian Atlas, the climate is Mediterranean, it is the rainiest zone, Mount Lala Khadîdja 2308m is in th Djurdjura.

High plains : Located between the Tellian Atlas and the Saharian Atlas, semi-arid climate, cereal cultivation, Mount Chelia 2328m is in the Aures.

The Sahara : Constitutes the greatest surface of the country.Dry, arid and deserted zones and in majority. Very varied landscapes: oases, volcanic mounts(Hoggar), dunes, ergs... Mount Tahet 2918m is in the Hoggar.

Several national natural reserves exist there.

Cultivation of cereals, citrus fruits, dates and vines primarily.
